Spice Mix Recipes

Making your own spices at home is way cheaper than the store-bought packets, and they can be adjusted to your own liking. These are my favorite recipes:

Taco Seasoning

1 tablespoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon black pepper

Mix together and store in airtight container. Depending on your taste preference, use as much or as little as you like.

Fajita Seasoning

3 Tbsp. cornstarch
2 Tbsp. chili powder
1 Tbsp. salt
1 Tbsp. paprika
1 Tbsp. sugar
2-1/2 tsp. crushed chicken bouillon cube
1-1/2 tsp. onion powder
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
1/2 tsp. cumin

This is equivalent to 3 packets of store mix. Store in airtight container.

Italian Salad Dressing Mix

1 tablespoon garlic salt
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 tablespoon white sugar
2 tablespoons dried oregano
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 tablespoon dried parsley
1/4 teaspoon celery salt
2 tablespoons salt
Directions

Store in airtight container. To prepare dressing, whisk together 1/4 white vinegar, 2/3 cup canola oil, 2 tablespoons water and 2 tablespoons of the dry mix.

Onion Soup Mix

2 1/2 tablespoons dried minced onion
4 cubes beef bouillon, crumbled
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper

Store in airtight container.

All these mixes will stay good for 3 months.

Do you have any mix recipes to share?

  3. Great idea as they can be quite expensive to buy, and this way you can adjust the taste until it is absolutely what you want. Would make nice gifts too.
